Its jaws are large and strong and resemble the antlers of a deer. That's where the name comes from. Male stag beetles use their jaws to fight each other for preferred mating spots in a way that resembles the way deer fight for females. The fights can also be for food, such as tree sap and rotting fruit. Despite their often intimidating appearance, they are usually not aggressive towards humans. Sometimes the jaws are so large that they interfere with the beetles' movement. The size of the stag beetle varies between 8 and 40 mm. Most stag beetles are black or brown. However, some are brightly colored. Their average lifespan in the wild can be up to 7 years! Stag beetles spend most of their very long life cycle underground as larvae. This can be from three to seven years, depending on the weather.
